England manager hunt sees Laurent Blanc as potential Roy Hodgson successor

Arsene Wenger and Blanc

Former France and Paris Saint-Germain boss Blanc is now available after being sacked despite winning the title in all three seasons he was in charge of the Ligue 1 giants, and he has a very strong ally in one of the FA’s three-man panel of king-makers.

Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill is a big fan of Blanc, who steered Les Bleus to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012, already speaks perfect English and played in the Premier League with his Red Devils.

Blanc has also coached big personalities before at PSG - including superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic - and has the depth of experience the FA head-hunters are looking for.

Gill, technical director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Martin Glenn have the job of finding a new manager, a task complicated by Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate deciding he doesn't want to step up and take interim control.

With the opening World Cup qualifier on September 4, the clock is ticking. And Glenn insists they are willing to go foreign again for the right man.

They will speak to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as a potential candidate, but the Gunners' former chairman Peter Hill-Wood insists the Frenchman is going nowhere.

The Londoners want to keep Wenger, with his current £8m-a-year contract due to expire in 2017.

Hill-Wood, who appointed the Frenchman in 1996, said: “I want him to stay at Arsenal. He is not a young chicken.

“He is 66 and he would be 67 when his contract is up and turn 69 a few months after the next World Cup. It is quite senior to be in that sort of role.”
