Envious teachers play spoiler as member of 'Team Mafisi' finds love in new colleague

A miracle has taken place at Meta Meta secondary school and tongues are wagging. Aeneas, whom some colleagues now claim is a member of the so-called Team Mafisi, is training the students for the music festivals competitions and has his eyes firmly fixed on the State House’s winner’s concert. For as long as I can remember, Aeneas has never associated himself with any co-curricular activity.

The arrival of the dimpled Matilda has, however, miraculously brought out the music expert in him. At the beginning of the year, Madam Flo resigned from being the patron of the school’s music club. Matilda was, thus God-sent. She was, within a week of her arrival, appointed patron of the club.

The ink had hardly dried on Matilda’s appointment letter when Aeneas offered to assist her. Aeneas has been training the students for the ‘Zilizopendwa (classics)’ category. He claims to have been a good singer since he was a small boy, and that he used to sing Soprano in the Sunday School choir.

As for the ‘zilizopendwa’ hits, he boasts that celebrated Musician Daudi Kabaka was his very good friend. Many of us can attest to Aeneas’ ability to dance ‘zilizopendwa’ as we have witnessed him twist on the dance floor at JJ’s pub. His limbs especially seem to acquire a burst of agility whenever he takes a few swallows.

Staff-room love

Benefiting from such expertise, the students are now executing breath-taking twist dance moves. Having sailed through the zonals, they are now preparing to conquer the county. Okonkwo’s love for ‘zilizopendwa’ has made him buy new costumes for the boys. “As teachers, it is our duty to identify and nurture talents among our students as Mr Aeneas and Madam Matilda are doing. Who knows, the next Bob Marley may be sitting in one of our classes,” said an elated Okonkwo, the school head, during a break time brief.

It looks like some teachers are jealous of Aeneas’ new found favour with Okonkwo. Wangu Wa Makeri, the mean deputy head, and Schola, the school’s rumour monger in chief, are among those who do not approve of his association with Matilda. Their attempts to make life difficult for the pair have borne no fruits.

Being in charge of the timetable, Wangu wa Makeri has tinkered with it to ensure that Aeneas’ afternoon offs and those of Matilda’s are as far apart as the North Pole is from the South Pole! At the beginning of the term, Aeneas was scheduled to be on duty with Matilda during the eighth week. Wa makeri, however, took advantage of Magarita’s illness last week to bring Matilda’s duty forward. She was on duty last week with Schola.

Aeneas has now been paired with Magarita. Undeterred and to the amazement of all, he helped Matilda with her duty. Last Friday, it wasn’t lost to the observant that the pair had put on some matching attires. Aeneas had a white shirt and a red tie while Matilda glided into the compound wearing a white top, a red scarf and matching red high heeled shoes. Both had black jackets. They kept on exchanging glances and talking about the upcoming county music festival competitions.

During tea break, Donatta mischievously commented: “Sponsors this time have to dig deeper into their wallets since the government has added tax on cosmetics.” Magarita paused from her tea to shout an Amen! Since Matilda joined Meta Meta, Aeneas hasn’t asked Donatta out for nyama choma and worse still, he has stopped buying camera outfits from ‘Donatta and twins boutique’. Her attempts to sell him a camera shirt were rebuffed when Aeneas said he no longer wore ‘mitumba’ clothes as they could lead to skin diseases. Talk of love brewed in the staff-room!
