A five-year-old boy from little known Marvelstar Junior School wowed President Uhuru Kenyatta and dignitaries who attended Madaraka Day celebrations at Afraha Stadium.
Alex Njeru, who presented a poem entitled 'Just for Love', was awarded Best Actor 2016 at the Kenya National Drama Festival.
Dressed in sky blue suit, white shirt and a bow tie, the boy full of courage and good command of English narrated how television has affected the growth of the current generation.
The poem depicted how parents spend more hours watching television than spending time with their children when they report back homes after school.
Njeru was cheered by the crowd that keenly followed him play alone on stage, a narrative majority agreed was a reflection of what is being witnessed. "I want to be like a TV, live like a TV in our house because it is given more priority," he recited.
The poem is a child's appeal to his parents to give him attention instead of being pre-occupied with work during the day and TV during the night, leaving limited interaction with the children.
The poem, which resonated well with the hundreds of Kenyans who jammed the venue, further criticised parents for failing to show direction to their children.
In the poem, he regretted that just like birds in the air that wake up early in the morning without direction, so are today's children.
He regretted living like birds of the air in their homes because they are forced to shape their character on their own without any guidance.
"I live like a bird, because of TV. My parents smile while watching TV, they laugh, they joke because of TV but whenever I ask for anything, I am silenced and kicked out of the house," he said.
