Government will not allow mass action in removal of IEBC, says Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery

Kajiado: The Government will not allow anyone to incite the public to engage in activities that can threaten peace and stability of the country, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has said.

Gen. Nkaisery said leaders must follow the law in airing their grievances on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners instead of inciting Kenyans to resort to mass action to forcefully remove them from office.

“We are not going to allow anyone to incite Kenyans to engage in activities like mass action that can threaten peace and stability of the country,” said Gen. Nkaissery.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service held at the Pentecostal Church of East Africa (PCEA) in Kimuka, Kajiado West Constituency attended by Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday, Gen. Nkaisery said the law was clear on the removal of commissioners from office.

MPs who echoed the Cabinet Secretary's sentiments included Moses Ole Sakuda (Kajiado West), Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), Janet Teyia (nominated), Peter Mositet (Kajiado), Rachel Shebesh (Nairobi), Beatrice Elachi (nominated) and Sonia Birdi (nominated).

They said they resolved to go to court to stop Cord leaders from engaging in mass action because there were provisions in the constitution that can fulfill their demands.

They also said Cord had an ulterior motive disguised as mass action but their main agenda was to cause chaos and destruction of property in the country.

“We ask our colleagues in the Opposition to stick to the Constitution and do the right thing as far as removal of IEBC commissioners from office is concerned,” said Mr. Ichungwa.

Mr. Ruto said anybody who is interested in mass action should do so without attempting to storm anybody’s office.

“The law is clear on the removal of officers from office. There is nowhere in the constitution that says officers can be removed from office through mass action,” said Mr. Ruto.

Mr. Ruto has meanwhile, asked County governments to tighten regulations in the construction industry to avert disasters.

Mr. Ruto said approved engineers and contractors who are professionals are the only ones who should undertake building construction.

In reference to the seven –storey building which collapsed in Huruma, Nairobi, killing 13 people and injuring several others, the Deputy President asked the relevant departments to closely monitor building and construction works to ensure safety standards are adhered to.

“It is important that we adhere to safety in building houses so that we avoid disasters,” said Mr. Ruto.

“We should ensure all buildings are well done according to specification requirements,” he added.

The Deputy President said the Government was focused on service delivery and unity of all Kenyans.

He also said plans were underway to improve roads and sewerage systems in Kajiado County.

Kajiado Governor David Nkedienye who was present said he was ready to work with Jubilee leaders for the sake of development.

The Deputy President also addressed wananchi in Ngong Township.
