New signings Fred Eshitemi, Kush Diriye and Robert Juma have been instrumental in Thunder’s impressive form in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men’s Premier League.

The trio’s exploits came in handy as the side bagged four points to lead league standings with 13 points.

Head coach Sadat Gaya admits his side has greatly improved since the three players arrived at the club.

“Before they came, we were struggling very much, but at the moment, everyone plays an integral part in our campaign,” Gaya said.

Gaya, who works with long-serving coach Faustine Mgendi, says they signed Eshitemi ahead of the new season, as Thunder did not have a polished point-guard.

“At first, we were not sure of him since he was coming from a lower tier side (Catholic University), but now, I am convinced we settled for a full package owing to the kind of transformation he has brought in the team,” Gaya admits.

Diriye was signed from Kenya Ports Authority(KPA), while Robert Juma was playing for Mount Kenya University’s Thika Campus.

Gaya said they signed the trio since their key players Shem Otieno and Patrick Oriana are out injured.

“So far, even Diriye and Juma have played their roles well. I hope the chemistry will even be greater with the return of the injured guys,” Sadat said.

According to Sadat, the side’s greatest achievement this season was being able to silence defending champions Ulinzi Warriors, who are now closing in on them at the top.

“I am glad we beat them and this is a clear indication that anything is possible,” the coach said.

Thunder have also defeated Co-op Bank, Nakuru Club, United States International University and Trailblazers. Despite the good run, Thunder lost to Lions and KPA.

Apart from the new signings, Gaya says he is proud of his veteran players; Griffins Ligare, Kevin Chogo and Charles Kitui, who have brought more pace to the side. At the weekend, Thunder defeated Trailblazers (75-63) and 87-78 at Nyayo Stadium.
