MP wants CORD leaders to compensate PEV victims

MP Dan Wanyama

Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama has accused Opposition leaders of being insincere when they demand that people who were displaced after the 2007 elections must be compensated.

Wanyama said CORD leaders have been pressing the Jubilee government to pay the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) yet they were part of the coalition government that was formed to quell violence.

"It is wrong for the three CORD principals to continue accusing the Jubilee government of failing to compensate thousands of Kenyans who were displaced from their homes yet they were in the government up to 2013," he said.

Speaking in Bungoma town Thursday, the law maker said that Raila Odinga was the Prime Minister during the grand coalition government; Kalonzo Musyoka was the Vice President while Moses Wetang'ula held a ministerial post.

"They should stop this blame game to portray the Jubilee administration as a failure. Violence occurred because Odinga disputed the election results. They should have paid the IDPs because they later formed a grand government with Kibaki," said Wanyama.

The legislator pointed out that the Opposition leaders are now crying out louder than the bereaved families yet they did not prioritize payment of IDPs during their times while in power.

He said during the grand coalition the current President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto were not near power.

"They are now addressing the rallies and press conferences accusing the Jubilee government of failing to compensate and resettle Internal Displaced Persons. This is the hypocrisy of the highest order, they had a chance to settle these people who are still suffering in camps," said Wanyama.

He called on Kenyans to be weary of what the opposition tells them because it won't help but divide Kenyans along tribal lines.

Wanyama accused the Opposition chiefs of pretending now that they are standing in solidarity with the IDPs yet they failed to compensate them during their era.
