Beware of militants

The specter of Al Shabaab refuses to go away. The National Intelligence Service has brought to the attention of President Uhuru Kenyatta that Al Shabaab militants have shifted their recruitment bases to Western, Nyanza and Western regions.

While originally their preferred area of operation was the coast region where it was easy to recruit indoctrinated Islamic youth by propagating an obscure religious doctrine, security operations by the government and the programme to rehabilitate youth made it hard for the militia’s recruiters to operate freely.

In light of this, it is necessary for all, not just the security services, to take precautionary measures to ensure the enemy within is identified and defeated.

With schools closed for April holidays, it is an opportune time for the Al Shabaab to prey the youth.

Parents and society in general must take care to ensure the youth stay clear of bad influences that could lead them astray. Across the country, disappearances of youngsters have been reported and the fear is that they could be getting into the militia group.
