Everton fear Romelu Lukaku exit to Manchester United

Everton fear Romelu Lukaku will move to Manchester United this summer - even if Louis Van Gaal does not get them into the Champions League.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez has insisted publicly the 22-year-old is not for sale but privately the club are worried they are fighting a losing battle.

And Everton believe United are in pole position - with Jose Mourinho a key factor as he is favourite to take over at Old Trafford and he will provide the star attraction and pulling power.

United are struggling to reach the top four and face Everton on Sunday desperate for points but it may not be the deciding factor in signing big names.

Mourinho was criticised for allowing Lukaku to leave Chelsea in a permanent deal in 2014 having loaned him out twice previously.

But there is no problem between the pair - Lukaku has even insisted publicly that there is no animosity - and United are keen.

They will face competition from Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich but, despite Lukaku saying he wants Champions League football, he could go to United even if they miss out.

United are desperate for a striker and have already met with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s representatives to land a big name forward this summer.
