I attended a burial at Kisauni cemetery and l was dumbfounded. The cemetery has lost its former glory.

The cemetery has overgrown grass, it is unkempt and there is no sign of a caretaker.

The last time l was there it was under the defunct municipal council and it was well maintained.

There was a barbed fence separating two sections as there was a path in the middle. The barbed fences are missing and a road has been constructed where there was a path.

Who authorized a road inside a cemetery? The road which is halfway done has damaged some graves and you can see slabs of former graves lying about and removed during the construction of the road.

Mourners were wondering where the graves of their loved ones were. Where were the MP and MCA when all these plans were being made?

Have these leaders visited Kisauni cemetery recently? We even witnessed a grave made of ceramic slabs damaged by vehicles which park there.

Some houses which had encroached in the cemetery should give way to the cemetery. The free town cemetery is also not spared either.

It is overgrown with grass and bushes. Only the Muslim cemetery has a wall round it with a gate.

There is an adage that says that in a cemetery there are numerous people who had great ideas, big dreams, ambitions and visions which never materialized.

Cemeteries should be given the respect they deserve. The MP and MCA are not representing Mombasa people well.

Kisauni cemetery serves the whole of Mombasa and to leave it in a deplorable condition is a shame.

Let’s them do something about it. A passage cannot be created in a graveyard, for what? Let Kisauni cemetery be private for the burial of loved ones.
