Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his first Oscar at th Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday.

This is his first Oscar after six nominations. The 41-year old star is best remembered for his role in the epic flick Titanic.

This time he won for his portrayal of Hugh Glass, a 19th-century American frontiersman who is left for dead by his comrades after being mauled by a bear during a winter expedition in the film The Revenant.

And he was exhilarated as he took the rare opportunity to push for environmental conservation.

“Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship to the natural world. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species,” he said.

He beat a list of equally great performances form Bryan Cranston in Trumbo, Matt Damon in The Martian, Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl.

DiCaprio was first nominated in 1993 at the ripe age of 19 for Best Supporting Actor for his work in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Since then, he’s been nominated for The Wolf of Wall Street (2013 Nominee, Actor in a Leading Role), Blood Diamond (2006 Nominee, Actor in a Leading Role), and The Aviator (2004 Nominee, Actor in a Leading Role).

In her first ever nomination Brie Larson acting in the film Room ran away with the Oscar ahead of Cate Blanchett in Carol, Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, Charlotte Rampling in 45 Years and Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn.

Brie Larson portrays Ma, a woman held captive in a small shed for seven years, who strives to create a normal life for her young son.

In an Oscar facing boycott from such established black producers and actors as Spike Lee and Will Smith for lack of diversity , the Best Actress and Best Actor in a Supporting Role were Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl and Mark Rylance in Bridge of Spies.

DiCaprio’s director in The Revenant, Alejandro Iñárritu was named the best director as Spotlight got the Best Picture ahead of The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max, Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant and Room.
