Kanu officials tell Deputy President William Ruto to apologise to Moi

Deputy President William Ruto

Kanu leaders in Meru have urged Deputy President William Ruto to desist from confrontational politics.

Speaking in Meru town yesterday, the officials led by Kiogora Muguna said Mr Ruto must not be seen as attacking leaders of other political parties simply because they challenged his regional stranglehold in the Rift Valley.

"Words that are a great insult to civility must be avoided at all costs especially by leaders with a national stature,"  Muguna said after a meeting of area Kanu officials.

The meeting at the Mwendantu grounds Kanu offices resolved to back party chairman Gideon Moi as he faces forces that, they said, are scared of his rising stature.

"The Hon Deputy President should apologise to Hon Gideon Moi at the earliest possible opportunity," said the officials of the independence party.

They spoke in wake of the DP's weekend political remarks in Kericho, where he was campaigning for Jubilee Alliance Party (Jap) candidate Aaron Cheruyoit, who is facing a formidable challenge from Kanu's Paul Sang.

The officials said political maturity demanded that the DP and his allies fully respect Kanu's democratic right to field candidates against other parties, including offering a candidate for the presidential race next year.

They said they fully recognise Ruto as Kenya's number two leader and his planned visit to Meru on March 6 but wanted him to also reciprocate the respect with regard to other leaders.
