Teachers have been advised not to sign performance contracts or agree to appraisals without consulting their union officials.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers County Executive Secretary Kenneth Ngangah told teachers to keep off the exercise because there has been no proper consultation with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

“We will not be forced to sign something that will hurt us. Let there be enough consultations before we understand the benefits of performance contracting,” said Mr Ngangah

Speaking yesterday at a Bungoma hotel during the Knut branch election, he said TSC should first employ enough teachers, improve their salaries and then ask them to be appraised or else they would not agree.

“Majority of our members are living in poverty yet TSC is not concerned about their welfare. We do donkey work but the beneficiaries are other people. Let our employer explain the benefits we will get after being appraised,” he said.

During the polls, Ngangah was reelected while Moses Masika was elected as his deputy. Alfred Wekesa replaced retiring David Wakhungu as the county union chairman while Robert Mandila was elected the deputy chairman.
