Court in Nakuru orders MCA and farmers linked to clashes to report to CID office every week

NAKURU: An MCA from troubled Maella and 24 farmers have been ordered to report to Naivasha CID office every Friday. The order was issued by Naivasha Chief Magistrate Peter Gesora during a case facing the MCA Kariuki Mujing'a and the farmers over the violence in the area for the last one week.

 The suspects are facing eleven counts of arson, destruction of property and incitement. The violence over control of Ng'ati Farmers’ Co-operative Society has seen houses and farm produce belonging to the directors of the land-buying company burnt down or damaged.

The MCA and the other suspects were released on a Sh1 million bond after being remanded for one week. The accused had appeared before the magistrate for review of their bond terms. The magistrate set the bail terms as Sh400, 000 in cash and Sh1 million in bond with a surety of the same.

Appearing for the suspects, lawyer George Kimani called for a lenient bond or cash bail, noting that many of his clients were peasant farmers. The case will be heard on May 24.
