Plot thickens for lazy students as one brings ‘fake’ parent to school

Student involved in an accident

The drama occasioned by many students’ failure to do holiday assignments and Okonkwo’s insistence that parents must come to school and supervise their children finish the homework is still with us.

Some students have disappeared, others have opted for transfers while some like Judy of 4G left her mother holding onto the nightdress, which Annette the Home science teacher, had insisted had to be stitched before she could be allowed into class.

“We mum tuishie. Hawa ma mode ni watiaji, nishaa register KCSE. Hii chuo inabore (Let’s go mum. these teachers shouldn’t bother us, I’m already registered for KCPE. This school is boring),” she said and rose. The ingenious students have devised ways to circumvent the pressure, one even coming with a hired ‘parent’.

Last Friday, Kim a Form 3G student was ferried to school in the boot of his father’s Probox. Kim’s left hand was in a cast while his head was swathed in bandages. His father frog marched him to the staffroom, prompting Magarita to protest.

“Ambia waalimu kila kitu!” his father ordered. The terrified young soul could hardly utter a word. His father related to the staff what had transpired. Kim hadn’t done his holiday assignments. Instead of giving his father the letter summoning him to school, he had gone home with a cocktail of lies as to why he needed to be transferred to another school.

He narrated how teachers regularly missed lessons and how the students were undisciplined, resulting in the school’s poor KCSE performance.

Holiday assignment

He didn’t see the possibility of passing well at Meta Meta and pursuing his dream career in actuarial science.

His father who had a week earlier paid the term’s fees was mad. Giving Kim money for fare, he ordered him to return to school immediately.

Kim’s mother intervened and pointed out the late hour. It was agreed that the boy would leave early in the morning. When the family woke up, Kim had left for school.

About midday of the same day, he was called by a stranger claiming that his son had been hit by a Boda Boda motorcycle, but his condition wasn’t critical. The ‘Good Samaritan’ had taken him to hospital and his left hand which had been fractured was put in a plaster.

To Kim’s father’s relief, the stranger told him he had given the boy fare and Kim was on his way home. When his parents got home, he was lying on a seat in the sitting room, writhing in pain.

He narrated how he had been hit by a Boda Boda Motorcycle and left for the dead in a ditch. It was then that the ‘Good Samaritan’ appeared and assisted him.

Kim’s father was greatly touched by that act of kindness and tried to contact the man to express his gratitude for saving his son. Unfortunately, the man was mteja. He called Donatta, Kim’s class teacher and informed her that Kim had been involved in an accident and had been advised to stay at home to recuperate.

The boy would be left home alone – with enough supply of fruits and lunch. His father was, however, alarmed when he got a text telling him to accompany his son to Meta Meta and supervise his holiday assignment. Not wanting to stress the accident victim, he kept quiet.

On the material day, he had gone home unexpectedly. He was shocked music playing at full blast while Kim was executing moves that could see him win any reputable dance competition.

The enraged dad, smelling a big rat, dashed into his room and came out with a whip. The truth came out in torrents. Kim had stage managed the accident. He had feared to tell his father the truth about the holiday assignments. The Good Samaritan happened to be the quack Doctor and partner in crime. He could no longer be reached on phone. What a tale!
