Work resumes on stalled road project Taita-Taveta road

VOI: A new contractor has started to work on the stalled Voi-Mwatate-Wundanyi road project.

According to Infrastructure Principal Secretary (PS) John Musonik, the rehabilitation work which is funded by the Government will cost about Sh967 million.

Addressing journalists in Wundanyi Thursday, the PS disclosed that the tender had been awarded to the Thirdway Engineering Bureau of China City Contraction Group Limited.

Dr Musonik was accompanied by Director General of Kenya National Highways Authority Peter Mukiria and senior officials of the Chinese company.

SURFACE DRESSING

The new contractor will carry out surface dressing of the road and expand shoulders among other repair works.

Musonik said there were additional works under the contract that covers construction of the 2.5km section to the Taita Taveta University College as well as repair and rehabilitation of the 18 sections of Mwatate-Wundanyi road. In total, the project covers 45km.

Wundanyi town and the road leading to the county governor's office will also be rehabilitated, he said.

"The works contract was originally awarded to Kundan Singh Construction Company Limited. The construction period was 24 months and defects liability period of 24 months. However, the contract was terminated due to non-performance," the PS said.
