Yes, rein in rogue preachers

The move by the Attorney General to regulate operations of religious organisations is long overdue. New rules published by the AG that will be gazetted at the end of this month are expected to rein in rogue preachers.

Preachers will be expected to have theological training certificates and certificates of good conduct, among others, to be allowed to practice.

This is a welcome move. For a long time, people who can only be described as criminals have masqueraded as preachers and brazenly milked Kenyans dry after providing non-existent miracles. Others have preyed on gullible children and even adults and indoctrinated them with hideous ideologies, turning them into murderous terrorists.

While some might argue that the new move infringes on freedom of worship, the Religious Societies Rules are well-intentioned and target wolves in sheepskins that taint the religions' good names.
