A newborn baby born in the back of a cab on the way to hospital is set to be named Uber after the taxi firm.

The child's mother, known only as Babli, booked an Uber cab to take her to hospital after calls for an ambulance went unanswered.

And the driver played such a part in delivering her baby safely that she has decided to give her child the unusual, cab-inspired name

Driver Shahnawaz said he picked up Babli, who was with two other women, and was en-route to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, India, when he had to stop unexpectedly.

Under Shahnawaz's guidance, the three women apparently transformed the taxi into a makeshift labour room.

Speaking to the Times of India, Shahnawaz said: "The woman was writhing in pain and her friends did not know what to do.

"I pulled out the towels from the seats and poured some drinking water into a bowl.

"The child was born within minutes and I was really happy to see that he was responding."

Shahnawaz then rushed Babli to the hospital's emergency unit on Thursday night.

Recalling his heroics, Babli told the Times of India: "He picked me up, put me on a stretcher and dragged it into the hospital."

Shahnawaz said: "This was one of the happiest moment of my life."

The baby boy will be named Uber at a ceremony on Sunday after the mother's family decided Shahnawaz should have the honour.
