MPs hunt governors over cash to hire 12,500 health workers

The National Assembly's Committee on Implementation wants governors to explain how they spent Sh3.9 billion that was released for the recruitment of health professionals.

The committee said it would push the counties to quickly "recruit and deploy" at least 12,500 health workers in the current financial year, to ease the plight of patients in the counties.

The MPs said the counties would be forced to employ 3,000 nurses and 3,000 clinical officers every year, until such a time as the health sector stabilises.

In a report tabled by Chairperson Soipan Tuya (Narok), the MPs said they had visited six counties following complaints from the public and they had found the services dire.
