Polo: Kimoi Moi leads Ultimate to produce top players against Zambia

On Sunday, Kimoi Moi was a player bubbling with pure talent.

His has been a touch of finesse and enviable zeal. Moi covered nearly every blade of grass at Nairobi Polo Club as his side Ultimate triumphed in the Connaught Cup Championships.

Thanks to their victory, some of Ultimate's players were named in the national team that is preparing to face Zambia in a 17-Goal international match at Manyatta Polo Club in Gilgil, next week.

The four players are handicap 3.5 Archie Voorspuy, Jammie Murray (3.5), Casimir Gross (5.5) and Craig Millar (3.5). They'll be coached by Richard Stonewigg.

The selection panel that picked the playing unit was led by international umpire Raphael Nzomo and Stonewigg.

"It is a formidable squad that is capable of beating the Zambians in the epic match," said Stonewigg.

Some of the national team players in Kimoi's camp were Gross (Casimir) and Tiva Gross, who is a member of the national women's side that is heading to Lusaka, Zambia for the International Championships, on July 12-14.

Kimoi's exploits were invaluable as his team won the Connaught Cup Championships on a 17-13 goal aggregate against Samurai.

Kimoi delivered 14 assists, which saw him named the Most Valuable Player of the three-day 14-Goal-tournament.

"We must also thank the caretakers for the good service to our ponies. Their exemplary services made our workouts easier," Kimoi said.

Samurai members were Raphael Nzomo (2.5), Archie Voorspuy (3.5), Craig Millar (3.5) and Izzy Parsons (2.5).

Craig's 17-year-old white pony (Farina) was voted the best horse of the competition and hopes to use it in the Mugs of Mugs Championships next week.

On their way to the title, Ultimate won 7-4 against Samurai in the first match, drew 4-4 in the second and registered a 6-5 score in the third match for a 17-13 goal aggregate.

MICT team of Phillip Arunga, Will Millar, Megan Griffiths and Phyllipa Gulden lifted the OMT Bowl.

On winning the title, MICT walloped Tusker Malt 3-1, thanks to the goals by Arunga, Millar and Griffiths while Ben Stonewigg replied with a consolation goal for the losers.

In the Wooden Spoon, a subsidiary of the OMT Bowl championships, Gipsy walloped 24;7 to win that title.

In the Red Bull Trophy, the Division Three Championships; Scissors team of Ed Burbridge, Fred Kambo, Jamie Excel and Simon Muchene lifted the title beating Paper 11.5-7  to finish tops with maximum 12 points from four matches.

Earlier, Scissors had beaten Rock 13-7 in their penultimate match ahead of the final match against Paper.

It was a sad for the Rock team of Aisha Gross, Rob Koitaba, Silke Hampson and Miranda Romjin when they lost all their three matches falling 7-6.5 against Paper in their final match.
