Eliud Kipchoge on Sunday morning won the Olympic men's marathon to clinch Kenya's fourth gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Kipchoge broke away from the pack after 30km and the rest could not catch up with him as he kept powering on to the tape in Sapporo. He went on to win the race in 2:08:38.

Kenya's Lawrence Cherono could only finish fourth as Netherland's Abdi Nageeye and Belgium's Bashir Abdi sprinted for silver and bronze.

Following Kipchoge's win, Kenya moved up to position 19th globally in medals standings and also 3rd in the track and field medal table after Italy and the United States.

Kenya now has four gold medals, four silver medals, and two bronze—marking the most wins of any African team at the 2020 Games.
