Jurgen Klopp's mother Elisabeth has died at the age of 81.

The Liverpool manager has paid tribute to his mum in German newspaper Schwarzwaelder Bote, who revealed the news of Elisabeth's death, saying: "She meant everything to me.

"She was a real mum in the best sense of the word. As a devout Christian, I know she is in a better place now."

Due to pandemic-related travel issues, Klopp is unable to travel to Germany for the funeral.

Klopp added: "The fact that I can't be at the funeral is due to the terrible times. As soon as the circumstances allow, we will hold a wonderful commemoration that is appropriate to it."

Elisabeth married Klopp's dad Norbert in 1960, and the couple had three children: Stefanie, Isolde and the youngster, Jurgen.

Norbert passed away in 2000 at the age of 66 after a short illness.

Klopp has previously revealed his regret that his dad never got to see him succeed as a manager and win the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool.

He said: "The actual thing is my father was a natural coach as well. So if you would have asked him he would have said you have to become a coach.

"We never spoke about that and he pushed me through my own career, pretty much, with really h "But now my real career he never saw, so that's hard from time to time."

On looking like his dad, Klopp added: "I'm now 53 and at a specific angle if I look in the mirror I'm scared to death because I look exactly like my father.

"I never looked like my father my whole life, I looked like my mother. And all of a sudden I look like my dad!"
