The much-awaited ‘Battle of the brands’ Mashujaa Shoot 2020 went down over the weekend at the Bamburi Rifle Club in Mombasa County.

The annual event, which is organised by the National Gun Owners Association of Kenya (NGAO-Kenya), attracted 88 participants drawn from the disciplined forces and licensed civilian firearm owners.

The Tier 2 sanctioned match, which was sponsored by Crown Paints, covered revolver, shotgun, carbine and pistol sections, among others.

Team Glock retained the title they won last year, while Team Ceska Zbrojovka (CZ) finished second.

Exceptional performance by Team Coast’s Omar Moosa saw him being bestowed with the Sharpshooter award, while Nairobi’s James Kariuki was the Expert shooter.

Jonathan Wahome, 16, became the youngest participant at an IDPA sanctioned match in Kenya.

GSU’s Belinda Akoth, who chose to compete with men, earned a spot as the highest placed lady according to her classification.

The event was graced by Mombasa County Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Fawz Rashid.

“I would like to reaffirm our commitment to NGAO-K, not only as a department but as the County Government of Mombasa through the leadership of Governor Ali Hassan Joho,” said Fawz.

NGAO-K chairman Martin Chengo said the association will stage more competitions ahead of the continental championships next year.

“Many countries are grappling with effects of Covid-19 pandemic, but we shall prepare well for next year’s Africa Championship,” said Chengo.

Early this year, NGAO-K conducted a ‘Know Your Gun Laws’ seminar at the Kirigiti shooting range, to sensitise firearm owners on gun safety and responsible use of firearms; which is the main cause championed by the association.

The end of the year match, as well as other subsequent matches, are geared towards preparing Team Kenya for the (IDPA) African Championships which will be held in Kenya in September 2021.

Other sponsors who came onboard are SEAGas Ltd and Elavon Investments Ltd.
