The Government through the Ministry of Sports has started the construction of a second stadium in Kisumu.

Two months after being commissioned, the construction of the new Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium begun on Wednesday.

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and a Senior Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Josephine Onunga, broke the ground for the Sh350m stadium being built at the Mamboleo Showground in the outskirts of Kisumu town.

Ms Onunga said the contractor has been given six months to complete the facility which will have a 12,000 sitting capacity.

She said the stadium was one of President Uhuru Kenyatta's flagship projects across the county.

Governor Nyong'o said the construction of the stadium has come at a time the county was working to improve sporting activities as part of his legacy.

He said his Government will build a sports academy and turn Kisumu into a sports village.

The stadium will have changing rooms, media centre, a boardroom, modern ablution block and ample parking.

The Governor said the County was looking for more money to complete the renovation of the Moi stadium.

He was accompanied by Nyanza Agricultural Society (ASK) Chairman George Ongudi, among other officials.

The Mamboleo Showground has over the years played host to Agricultural Show of Kenya exhibitions, been used as the home ground for Kisumu Rugby Football Club, concerts and also hosting Onge Ringo Six-Aside football tournament and Touch Rugby.
