Final plans for the 2019 Safaricom-sponsored East African Safari Classic Rally were announced yesterday during the Official Press Conference held by the organisers at the Pan Africa Hotel.

Special guests representing the official sponsors of the nine-day competition also attended the function in addition to the Director of the East African Safari Rally Ltd, Raju Kishinani and his team of officials.

Pipi Renu, the General Manager of the East African Safari Rally Ltd, gave details of the entry list they had received for the rally that kicks off on 27th November and finish on 6th December.

“We have received 21 entries from the local and foreign-based drivers. Kenya is represented by seven drivers while Sweden is the next highest with three crews,” said Renu.

Others included the Marketing Manager of Vivo Energy, Mark Santo, Saveer Vohra (Director Saravo  Pan Africa Hotel), Alexander Helfritz (DT Dobie Sales and Marketing Director) and Thusar Mehta (Senior Management Bidco Africa)

Rules for the Classic Event are not that tough like the Kenya National Rally Championship events. While fireproof overhauls are compulsory in the KNRC series, Classic does apply that rule as long as the drivers sign the indemnity forms before the start of the rally.

Helmets and HANS device (Head and Neck Support have to be worn in the Classic Rallies also.

The nine-day competition will be starting from Mombasa before tackling the nine days of the competition that will be split between Kenya Tanzania.

This year the rally will be traversing areas around Voi, Arusha and Tanga.

Each day, the rally consists of three competitive stages, and transport or liaison sections. Total distance will be 4500kms of which 1500kms will be competitive distance covering 24 stages in both Kenya and Tanzania respectively.

On any given day of the rally, crews will be expected to cover between 390 – 500km (combined distance of stage and transport).

Classic rallying is all about endurance, and crews should get ready for mammoth stages of up to 160km long.
