Nyali club’s Jimmy Kingo’ri braved strong monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean to win the 2019 Pre-Barry Cup tournament at the par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa golf course on Friday.

King’ori, handicap 11, rolled 11 level pars against some bogey shots in both nines to emerge the overall winner with 38 stableford points.

“The winds were very strong and the pin positions were tricky but I won. I thank the organisers for giving us a chance to play,” said King’ori.

Amani National Congress Party (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi, playing off handicap 17, found the course tough as he collected a paltry 16 points. He was one of the sponsors and played alongside Club’s Lady Captain Suzan Mwangi, secretary Mary Mariga and Nyali’s vice-captain Evans Manono.

Home club’s handicap 28 James Gitonga scored 37 points on count back to emerge the Man winner after tying with the club’s chairman Symon Wambugu, handicap 18, who was runner up while Mburu Mwangi, handicap 12 who is also from the same club came third with 34 points.

Handicap 32 Glady’s Mutisya scored 31 points to win the Best Lady prize. Great Rift Valley’s handicap four Samuel Njogo won the best Guest Man on count back with 36 points while Nyali’s handicap 10 Zayan Din won the best junior prize with 35 points.

The 18-hole tournament that attracted 100 golfers was used as a curtain-raiser for main Barry Cup tourney, which is also known as Coast Open Championships.

The main championship that celebrates its 100 years kicked off yesterday and ends this evening.

The championship, which is a two-day 36-hole stroke play has attracted 200 top golfers with handicap 12 and below. It’s a premier golfing event for amateurs in East Africa.

Club chairman Symon Wambugu said the tournament stands out as the oldest at the Coast.

“The donor Percy Barry was not only a founder member of the club but was also the first honourary treasurer and captain four times,” said Wambugu.

Wambugu said Barry, who was a high profile golfer, was elected an honourary life member of the club who won the first Barry Cup competition when it was played during Christmas of the same year.

“Originally, it was meant that any competitor winning the trophy three times takes it,” said Wambugu.

Elsewhere, Tom Hoge led the Barracuda Championship with 21 points before rain and lightning put a halt to the tournament's second round on Friday in Reno, adds Reuters.

Hoge led fellow Americans Collin Morikawa, Beau Hossler and John Chin by one point at the only PGA Tour event played under the modified Stableford format.

The format, which is designed to reward aggressive play, gives eight points for an albatross, five for eagle, two for birdie, zero for par and subtracts a point for bogey and three for double-bogeys or worse.

Hoge, who completed his round at the Montreux Golf Club, said he was happy to be back on a course.
