The third International Defence Pistol Association shooting training in Mombasa begins tomorrow through to Sunday at Bamburi Rifle Club, courtesy of Triple Tap Range.

The two-day exercise is open only to vetted and licensed firearm holders in Mombasa.

Speaking to Standard Sports ahead of the training, SSP Expert shooter Sammy Onyango said: “IDPA shooting is growing in Kenya and therefore we need to train Mombasa shooters in proficiency and to build there sporting ability.”

Onyango, who is also an IDPA Instructor, returned from Budapest, Hungary, on Monday where he won gold in the SSP Expert category at the MagTech Championship.

“These are exercises that will run across the country to improve on the proficiency of licensed firearm holders in sports shooting. The training will run for two days,” Onyango said

He added: “The training will include all levels of basics, intermediate and advanced exercise for IDPA sports shooting.”

The Kenya IDPA Shooting team is set for World Championships to be held in Alabama, USA, this October.

IDPA shooting as a sport uses practical equipment including full charge service ammunition to solve simulated real world self-defence scenarios using practical handguns and holsters that are suitable for self-defence use.

The main goal is to test the skill and ability of an individual.

Scoring in IDPA shooting is based on time, with lower times being better. It is a sport where seconds count and thus calls for quick thinking and reaction.
