EA to stage first Primary Schools games this month

Primary Schools will feature for the first time in East African Games scheduled for Arusha, Tanzania, next month.

Kenya will select the team at the national primary school games in Meru on July 30 to August 3 for the regional showpiece.

Mamai Etyang’, the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association secretary-general, said they are keen to replicate the secondary schools counterparts, who have maintained brilliant shows in East African games.

“We have a huge pool of talent that will help us form strong teams for the regional games,” said Etyang’.

Yesterday, the association released fixtures for the four disciplines in football, handball, volleyball and netball in the national championships.

Etyang’ said they expect competitive contests given the high standards displayed at the regional championships.

Eight regions have confirmed participation. They are Rift Valley, Nairobi, Coast, Nyanza, Western, Central, Eastern and Northern regions.

In boys’ football, defending champions Nyanza are in Pool B alongside archrivals Rift Valley, Western and Nairobi. Pool A has Central, Coast, Eastern and Northern.

Coast is expected to give Pool B teams stiff challenge at the knockout stages for them to cruise past Central, Eastern and Northern in the preliminary matches.

In girls’ football, Nyanza and Western are teams to beat in Pool A that also has Northern and Eastern. Pool B features Coast, Rift Valley, Nairobi and Central.

Coast, Nyanza, Nairobi and Western are in Pool A of boys’ volleyball while Pool B comprises Northern, Central, Eastern and Rift Valley. In girls’ volleyball, Pool A has Northern.
