Chess Kenya chairman Bernard Wanjala has been appointed as a council member of the world governing body FIDE Social Commission.

The commission is headed by Pablo Zarnicki from Argentina. Apart from Wanjala other council members are Yusuf Dogruer from Turkey, Philip Chetalain from Haiti and Shahab Uddin Shamin from Belgium. Apart from Wanjala, another Kenyan, Victor Ngani has been appointed as a member of the FIDE Medical Commission.

Ngani, a medic by profession is the current Kenyan national chess champion, a title he won last month at Parklands Sports club.

The Chess Kenya boss thanked FIDE for the two appointments saying they will go a long way to help promote the sport.

“We are delighted by the recognition we have received from the world body. It shows that they are recognising the great work we have done” he said.

Ngani on his part said his appointment was a great honour.
