Mathare United have a slight edge as they take on AFC Leopards in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) tie at the Nyayo National Stadium today.

In six meetings between them, United have won twice with Leopards picking just one win while the other four matches have ended in draws.

Indeed when the two sides met in the first leg, it ended in a 1-1 draw. Going into today’s match, Leopards are the more motivated side after stunning Thika United 4-0 last weekend in Mumias.

The result ended Leopard’s eight-match winless run and they have been boosted their squad by signing a number of experienced players among them Paul Mungai Kiongera who announced his return to the KPL with a goal last weekend.

United lost 1-0 to Western Stima last weekend making today’s match a must win especially in as so far as their title ambitions are concerned.

Elsewhere, Ulinzi Stars coach Robert Matano insists his side is still in contention to lift the KPL title despite losing their last two matches.

The soldiers take on Nairobi City Stars today knowing very well that another loss will almost dim their title hopes.

Ulinzi lost 2-1 to Tusker last weekend, a week after going down by a solitary goal to Mathare United but Matano insists the two losses are insignificant in as far as the title race is concerned.

“It is too early to talk about who will win the title. We have many matches to go and as Ulinzi Stars we will continue fighting to the end,” he said.

Matano also said the loss to Tusker was an unfair result.

“That was a forced loss if you look at the kind of goals Tusker scored. The first one was from a clearly offside position while the penalty they were awarded they did not deserve. We feel the referee robbed us in this situation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Thika United coach James Nandwa says it will be difficult to motivate his boys when they host Western Stima today after his side soaked in four goals last weekend.

“After such a big loss, it is always difficult to motivate your boys but we have to do it. I have to convince them that it is not the end of the world and all we need to do is win our next match and we will get our groove back,” he said.

Tomorrow, champions Gor Mahia play Ushuru at Nyayo Stadium and hope to keep up with leaders Tusker who have a match against Chemelil Sugar tomorrow.
