Manchester City players fear axe from Guardiola

Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola’s arrival at Manchester City has left Blues stars fearing for their places, with his jovial threat being taken seriously by some of the squad.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager was officially unveiled by City yesterday in front of 5,800 fans at the club’s training complex next to the Etihad.

Asked how he would deal with his squad, Guardiola smiled and said: “First I have to meet my players and know them. I know them from the TV.

“I have to hug them, kick their arses, and after I need time to know them. I have an idea but I need time.”

Although Guardiola was half-joking, his arrival will have spread panic amongst some of the squad, who fear the axe under their new boss.

Several stars, including Pablo Zabaleta, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri, could be offloaded this summer, as the 45-year-old coach looks to make an immediate impact.

No-nonsense Guardiola has already made his mark at City by axing several respected members of the backroom staff and bringing in his own men.

Some of City’s players are dismayed at the jettisoning of personnel with whom they had forged trusted relationships, but Guardiola is determined to work with his own people.

Ex-Arsenal and Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta confirmed he has retired from playing to join fellow Spaniard Guardiola’s coaching staff.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead with City,” said Arteta. “The opportunity to join Pep and his team was amazing for me and I am incredibly excited for the future.”
