President Uhuru Kenyatta rewards Rugby Sevens team with Sh 10M

President Uhuru Kenyatta has rewarded the triumphant national Sevens rugby team with Sh10 million for their historic Main Cup victory in Singapore.

Kenya pulled off a stunning 30-7 upset victory over defending champions and series leaders Fiji to claim their first ever World Sevens Series title in the eighth leg of the 2015/2016 HSBC World Sevens Series

Speaking after inviting the ‘Lions of Singapore’ to State House Nairobi to congratulate them for their exploits in Singapore, Uhuru assured the team of the government’s support as they prepare for the last two legs (Paris and London) and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“For your impressive performance, the government will give you Sh10 million and we shall ensure all their dues are settled,” said Uhuru.

“Honestly, you have made us proud not only for me but millions of Kenyans who were watching you both locally and internationally. Some of us had started losing hope and were not believing but through your commitment and dedication you made history.

“On behalf of the government and all Kenyans I thank these lads for putting our country on the world map. And I am confident you guys can rewrite history in Rio.”

However, the President challenged the Kenya Rugby Union and corporate world to fully support the team.

“What remains now is for the KRU officials and sponsors to put their foot forward and support these boys to the fullest. They have made us proud and we must support them.”

The president further revealed that he will be signing the Anti-doping bill into law today.

Prior to the event, there was a light moment of excitement as the president made a dummy line out with the team captain Andrew Amonde, Willy Ambaka and Collins Injera. This was just after head coach Benjamin Ayimba had given him a branded Kenya Sevens jersey. The Ministry of Sports had also given the team Sh2 million on Tuesday.

In attendance was the Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, Sports Kenya Chairman Fred Muteti, Kenya Rugby Union Chairman Richard Omwela, Brand Kenya Officials, Kenya Airways and betting firm SportPesa officials.
