Metropolitan Region Secondary School Games: Giants put titles on the line at ‘Metro games’ in Machakos

Axienty is building as teams arrive in Machakos ready for the Metropolitan Region Secondary School Games, which start at various venues within the counties tomorrow.

Metropolitan region is made up of four counties — Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado and Makueni.

Basketball boys’ matches promises thrills and spills especially after East African and National champions Upper Hill of Nairobi and bitter rivals Laiser Hill of Kajiado were both drawn in Pool “B” of the event.

Metropolitan secretary general Gerald Mutuku released the draws in which Upper Hill, Laiser Hill, Muindi Mbingu of Makueni and Johannachase of Machakos play in Pool “B”.

Lukenya (Machakos), Kilungu (Makueni), Moi Forces Academy (Nairobi) and Ole Kejuado (Kajiado) teams are drawn in Pool “A”. They target to make their first ever appearance at the National Secondary School Championships.

Mutuku said: “Basketball is the most competitive discipline in term one games and we expect to see the same level of competition in Machakos.”

In basketball girls, defending champions Buru Buru of Nairobi play their preliminary matches in Pool “B” against Barazani (Makueni), Muthetheni (Machakos) and Moi Girls Isinya (Kajiado).

Laiser Hill will be seeking to send two teams to the nationals when their girls’ team take on Nairobi champions Parklands Arya, Kitise (Machakos) and Sengani (Makueni).

In hockey boys, Thomas Fish of Kajiado have chance to realise their dream of featuring at the national stage after their boys’ and girls’ teams qualified for the “Metro” Games.

Thomas Fish hockey boys’ team start their quest towards the nationals when they take on Kiongwani of Makueni, Machakos Boys and Hillcrest (Nairobi) in Pool “B”.

Nairobi champions Lenana are drawn in Pool “A” alongside Ole Kejuado (Kajiado), Kilungu (Makueni) and Tala (Machakos).

Former National champions Pangani of Nairobi are back and will launch their campaign in Pool “B” together with Thomas Fish, Barazani (Machakos) and Kiundwani (Makueni).

The Metropolitan Games would also have competition in rugby 15s, swimming, decathlon, heptathlon and cross country.

Elsewhere, Aberdare region would host their Championships at Mang’u High and Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi on Saturday.

Aberdare region secretary general Francis Wanjohi said: “The heptathlon and decathlon events will be staged at Kasarani while Mang’u is venue for ball games.”

Winners in regional games qualify for the nationals to be staged at the Shanzu Teachers College in Mombasa next month.

It is from the nationals that the best teams will be selected to compete at the East Africa Regional Championships.
