After a grueling 395 kilometres and 12 competitive stages under the scorching coastal sun, Nakuru farmer Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo emerged the winner of the season-opening KCB Malindi Rally 2014.

Navigated by Tim Jessop in a Menengai Oil Mitsubishi Lancer EVO9, Tundo - who had earlier been disqualified by stewards for stopping a stage at CS5 - was later on in the race day declared the rightful winner of the Mombasa Motor Club (MMC) organised event.

Second overall was defending champion Baldev Chager and his partner Ravi Soni who trailed Tundo by a 57 second margin.

Kisumu’s Team Kibos crew of Jassi Chatthe and Gugu Panesar sealed the podium dash in 1hour, 59minutes and 22 seconds.

Seven Mitsubishis occupied top 10 positions while Subarus had three in Manvir Baryan (4th), Naushad Kara (9th) and 10th placed Quentin Mitchell.

Alasdair Keith navigated by Tariq Maliq in a Subaru GC8 finished 11th to win the Group S class. Hussein Maliq in 12th place took second place in Group S.

Rajbir Rai had earlier been declared the winner but after leading drivers protested Tundo's exclusion, time cards were re-audited handing Tundo victory.

The 2012 Two Wheel Drive Champion Nadeem Kana navigated by James Mwangi in a Subaru won the Formula 2 Class while Gurmit Thethy finished second.

The tough conditions saw 21 drivers and 23 starters survive the grueling course.

Among the casualties were Ian Duncan who broke his left suspension arm, Kantilal Kukadia who rolled at CS1, Steve Gacheru with turbo problems at CS3, Sudesh Hirani, Izhar Mirza with a broken drive-shaft and Issa Amwari.

Mombasa based Naushad Kara Lota finished as Coast's top driver in position nine. A total of 42 cars have started the event which counts towards the opening round of the Kenya National Rally Championship 2014.

Tundo was the first one off the ramp followed by Baldev Chager and Ian Duncan.

The leading cars were flagged off by Tana River Governor Hussein Dado assisted by Kilifi Deputy Governor Kenneth Makombo and KCB's Director of Logistics Asiko Awiro.

Other cars were also flagged off by Malindi MP Dan Kazungu, and KCB Director of Logistics Asiko Awiro.
