Captains are the overall winners of the inaugural Standard Group Sports Day that was held at Impala Club on Saturday.

Dressed in the team’s conspicuous yellow T-shirts, the contestants from the group’s Commercial division amassed a whopping 82 points in the games to lift the title, which was iced with a Sh100,000  cash prize.

Giniwasekao from the Electronic division emerged second with 80 points, which saw them bag Sh50,000.

Hard-fighting Game Yetu, from the Print division, bagged Sh30,000 after finishing third with 57 points.

Tying in fourth place with 52 points were Pacesetters and Cheche, while the Invincibles were sixth with 44 points.

Among the games contested were Norwegian Ball, football, swimming, tug-of-war, pool, table tennis, darts, relays, volleyball, touch rugby and a decathlon obstacle race.

“It is not a surprise that we won. We knew we would owing to the great preparation we had ahead of the games. We had all agreed that whoever  did not attend the training sessions would not take part in the games,” said Julius Mokaya, one of the Captains team members.

tight competition

Fredrick Okango, another team member, warned other teams to expect tight competition in coming years.

“This was part of history in the making as we are the first team to win the Standard Group Sports Day overall prize. We have great cohesion that will see us retain the title many times in the years to come,” Okango told FeverPitch.

Apart from the overall title, the Captains were also awarded the best cheerleading and team with most participants titles.

Despite their few numbers Games Yetu, led by their captain, Robin Toskin, proved a hard nut to crack, especially in the ball games where they emerged champions in Norwegian Ball and football.

Unlike other teams that started off with a bonus ten points owing to their impressive numbers, Game Yetu, who were only a handful at the start, strove to acquire points as the games progressed.

The Print division was buoyed by their ability to score 25 points in the Norwegian Ball and football.

They went ahead to bag four points, which saw them top pool B in football, propelling them to the finals where they dispatched a rough and abrasive Cheche 2-0 to lift the   game’s most coveted title. The winning goals were scored by Rodgers Eshitemi and Bismarck Mutahi.

Standard Group Chief Executive Officer Sam Shollei and Human Resource Director Pauline Kiraithe hailed the event, stating that they were an indication of better things ahead for the company.

“We will strive to give employees the best they deserve. The games were meant to provide cohesion and provide a mutual forum for networking and getting to know each other,” said Shollei who flagged off the games. –[email protected]
