Nairobi,Kenya:India won both the men’s and women’s second Roll Ball World Cup titles as the global championships ended at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday.
India won 9-6 to clinch the title that they missed in the first edition of the World Cup they hosted in Pune, India, in 2011.
Iran were leading in the first half 4-3. After the breather, both teams intensified attacks but India were the lucky side when they were given a penalty that saw Iran’s player sent off.
A minute later, Iran attacked to make matters 5-5, but Iran’s joy was short-lived when India scored another goal for a 6-5 lead.
In the women’s category, Kenya’s went up in flames when India thrashed the home girls 10-1 in the women’s finals.
Kenya’s men finished fourth after they failed to tame the defending champions Denmark in a hard fought and entertaining third place play-off, which they lost 4-3.
Denmark scored the opening goal just a minute into the match but the home team intensified attacks and Moses Atenya scored two minutes later, before Albert Omwane equalised to make matters 2-2.
Paul Kijani missed a penalty that could have given Kenya an early lead.
Atenya then scored his second goal of the match. Minutes later, Kenya were awarded a penalty that was disallowed owing to bad positioning of the penalty taker.
Numerical advantage
Denmark scored an equaliser as the home team failed to utilise their numerical advantage after a Danish player was given a red card.
Earlier, Iran beat the defending champions Denmark 3-2 to book a finals date against India.
Kenya finished in second place behind Denmark in pool A to meet India in the semi-finals, while Iran finished second to meet Denmark in the other semi-final encounter. In the first semi-final duel, Denmark were given a rude shock, losing to Iran 3-2.
In the second semis, Kenya were not lucky as they were thrashed 8-1 by India , with Phillip Akatu netting the consolation goal for the hosts.
