Thika Queens perched at the top of Women’s Premier league

By Rebecca Gichana

Women’s Premier League side Thika Queens top the league with 11 points from five matches.

The league leaders are enjoying an unbeaten run after registering three wins and two draws.

Makolanders, who failed to honour their weekend fixtures to Kisumu citing lack of funds, are second with ten points from four matches of   three wins and a draw.

Makolanders coach cum player Florence Adhiambo said it was difficult for the team to travel to Kisumu since the club is yet to get a sponsor.

“Travelling from Nairobi to Kisumu is very expensive, and we can not afford without sponsors,” said the tactician.

Adhiambo, who is also the under-17 Harambee Starlets head coach, added that players need some allowances, especially when they play away matches.

“Catering for players while playing away matches is equally expensive. With no sponsors on board, this season has been the most difficult one in terms of organisation,” observed Adhiambo.

Nyuki Starlets are third with ten points from four matches. They are followed by Galactico Youth with no point from the three matches they have played.

At the same time, Football Kenya Federation official in charge of Women League, Angeline Mwikali is urging for well wishers to come on board and support the league.

“Most clubs are self sponsored and cannot cater for the expenses running the league. We are appealing for corporates and well-wishers to support this season in order to empower the girl child in the sport. We have so many talents in the country and there is need to tap and nurture them,” Mwikali told FeverPitch.

Meanwhile Kenya is ranked at the bottom of the log according to the latest Fifa ranking released this month.

USA are at the top of the log   ahead of Germany, Japan, Brazil, Sweden and France.

Nigeria is at top in Africa at position 32, followed by Cameroon (48), Ghana (49), South Africa (51)and Equatorial Guinea (52) complete the top five spots in Africa. Kenya ranks 20th in Africa.
