Series leader Amit Pandya faces challenge from Bhatt

Several drivers are set to renew their rivalries during the fifth round of the Kenya National Autocross Championship to be organised by Rallye Sports Club (RSC) at Juja Farm on Sunday.

The event is sponsored by Safaricom Paybill and Safaricom Business.

Veteran Asad Anwar will be eyeing the title against a spirited challenge from his opponents. Anwar will be driving Masserati Dakar Rally buggy with Aslam Khan.

He comes up against Mike Mwangi and partner Captain Kiki Onyanka flying the Safaricom flag. Also in the team will be Waita Thuo.

Two-wheel-drive turbo class leader Amit Pandya is also looking forward to the race and so are his challengers Amit Bhatt and Bobby Sehmi.

There has been a cut-throat competition for the trio with Pandya clinging to the lead with 65 points.

Sehmi is just a point adrift. Bhatt is bubbling with confidence with only seven points separating him from the series leader.

“We are ready for autocross five and being on the leaderboard is fun as long as it lasts. I’m leading by one point but it’s still too early to make predictions because the championship is open. We are going to give it all our best in every event,” said Pandya.

However, the threat of Bhatt catching up is so real.

“I’m looking forward to the race. The buggy has been prepared by Suvi Racing and its all systems  go. At the moment there are just a few minor adjustments to be made. I’m looking forward to getting back in the seat again and have a great day out with the rest of the autocross family,” said Bhatt.

The two-wheel-drive non-turbo class has attracted a sizable chunk of teenage drivers including series leader Tejas Hirani in a Rage Buggy.

Sachin Choda and Gurmit Mehta will be a delight to watch if their driving lines are anything to go by and are also expected to take the fight to Hirani.

Safari Rally champion Baldev Chager hopes to register a flawless fifth straight win in the Open Class and so is his Kabras Sugar Racing team mate Anish Chouhan, who seeks to extend his lead against Asad Khan “Kalulu”.

Meanwhile, the Autocross Commission of KMSF has announced calendar changes to the second half of the series. Kenya Motor Sports Club will stage the  Autocross sixth leg on September 7.

The October 12-13 date is set for Autocross seven to be organised by Mombasa Motor Club (MMC). Autocross eight and nine will be held on November 16-17 and December 7-8.
