Chemelil FC, Muhoroni Youth FC face off in a local derby

By Phillip Rwa

Chemelil FC who last weekend thrashed Muhoroni Youth FC 3-1 in a Kenya Premier League encounter face their next door rivals in a local derby fixture tomorrow.

Chemelil, who claim bragging rights as the more seasoned of the neighbours, won the match courtesy of a hat-trick by Daniel Murage in the second, seventh and 80th minutes.

When they travel less than 10 kilometres to the other side of the sugarcane growing zone, they will start as firm favourites.

Muhoroni Youth scored their only goal in that encounter in the 55th minute through Emeka Joseph.

Chemelil are currently placed fifth in the log with 22 points from 14 matches after winning six, drawing four and losing four games. On
the other hand,  Muhoroni Youth FC have played 15 matches, won only three drawn four and lost eight and are placed second from the bottom.

Referee Amos Ichingwa from Nairobi has been appointed as the centre referee and will be assisted by Gilbert Cheruiyot, who will be
the first assistant and David Otiang’a, who will be the second assistant.

Muhoroni Youth, under the tutelage of Alfred Imonje who is a former Somali national team coach, joined the league last season and managed to missing the relegation by a whisker.

Other teams like Congo FC who joined the league with Muhoroni Youth were demoted to the Division One league after coming bottom in
the top tie league. Muhoroni Youth were lucky to be in position 14 with 27 points from 30 games.

Chemelil have been consistent since joining the league in 1997 and have always managed to finish among the top eight finisgers.

The club won Kenya Cup in 2003, and made two appearances in the Confederation Cup in 2004 and 2005.

Though they have never won the Kenyan Premier League, the matches ahead will judge weather Mike Muiruri’s squad will make it to the
annals of Kenyan football, and that will depend with how they tackle the remaining fixtures.

Muhoroni Youth, who won the Division One KFF Premier League in 2009 and were denied the chance to join the top tier
because of wrangles that pitted KFF and FKL will be staring at the relegation in the face should they lose the remaining fixtures.

Tomorrow’s encounter will be a big match to watch for both teams whose fan base is more or less the same, but swing in between depending on their performances.

Chemelil Sugar CEO Charles Omwele is keen to see the ascendancy of his club and has promised huge rewards if the team overcome remaining fixtures, especially tomorrow’s.
