Safety helicopter to monitor Safari Rally cars, say officials

By Oscar Pilipili

Like is done in European rallies, organisers of the 61st Safari Rally have an additional helicopter that will fly over the course to enhance safety of spectators and crew.

ALS, the official safety and evacuation helicopter providers of the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC), will have a chopper near the service park in case of any eventualities.

Event Director, Ben Muchemi, said the chopper will be above ground, thanks to experienced crew who have previously steered the Citroen World Rally team helicopters.

Meanwhile, the safety and medical commission of Kenya Motor Sports Federation, who have only been in office for a few weeks, have started implementing some of the ideas they have had in the past.

“We have held discussions with ALS and visited their hangar and, together with Red Cross, managed to arrange for the helicopter to be fully kitted by Red Cross with a full Safety and Medical Kit and will fly with two paramedic staff. This will be carried out through the rest of the season,”  said Julius Ngigi, the Chairman of the Safety and Medical Commission.

Ngigi added that there will be two ambulances on day one, six today and five tomorrow to cover the entire rally.

Ngige said all the ambulances are fully kitted and instructed clearly not to drive against rally traffic whatsoever.

“Awareness has been created through the local administration and local language radio stations to alert the public. Regular and Administration Police will deploy officers throughout the route and especially at the start and finish of every stage.

Sale of alcohol in the Service Park or the route will be prohibited and confiscation and perpetrators arrested,” said Ngige.
