Sevens rugby action moves to Machakos

All roads lead to Machakos this weekend for the inaugural Masaku Sevens Rugby tournament at the Machakos Golf Club.

In a bid to take rugby to Eastern Province, the tournament is expected to be a hit according to tournament director Benjamin Ayimba.

“This is a chance for people to take a one hour leisurely drive to Machakos and enjoy the wonderful game of rugby in a totally new setting,” he said.

“The weather is same to that of Nairobi and so people should just carry a jumper because the evening will be rather chilly,” he said.

With Kenya Harlequin, Mwamba and Nakuru having confirmed participation, action on the pitch is expected to be intensive as 12 teams in four pools battle it out for the ultimate prize of Sh50,000.

“There is a lot of cash money to be won after the two days, with the most promising player, the most valuable player and the top try scorer all getting Sh5,000 each,” said Ayimba.

The runner’s up position in the pool is expected to bag Sh30,000. Even though the teams involved will be looking at getting the prize money, the main aim for the sides will be to get some warm up action ahead of the national sevens circuit which kicks off next weekend.

With the National team having received a new coach in Mike Friday, stakes will be high in the national circuit as players seek a fresh chance to be selected in the national set-up and take part in the new International Rugby Board Sevens circuit.

Camping accessories

After the games on the first day, Ayimba has revealed that fans will get a chance to hire camping tents if they like, or they can even come with their own.

“Fans can carry the collapsible chairs and accessories which will make their time at the event even more pleasurable,” Ayimba added.

Entrance to the tournament will be Sh200 for adults while children will only part with Sh100.
