Tusker defender signs deal with Sanlam Santos

Tusker defender Brian Mandela has joined the millionaires’ club after signing a lucrative deal with relegated Premier League Soccer side Sanlam Santos.

Mandela, according to sources close to the two clubs, has signed a two-year deal with the club earning Sh1million sign on fee. He will be paid Sh250,000 per month, which is six times the Sh40,000 he was earning at Tusker.

The brewers have also earned big in the deal pocketing Sh4million for letting go of their prized defender.

The deal was concluded on Monday after the two clubs agreed on the transfer fee.

Tusker were initially holding out for a Sh6million transfer fee and Santos had offered Sh2million.

Former Kenyan captain Musa Otieno who is an assistant coach at the South Africa club and played for the club invited Mandela to South Africa and played a big role in ensuring he was signed.

Mandela travelled to Cape Town last month immediately after international duty with the national team Harambee Stars who lost to Namibia and Togo in World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Speaking of Mandela’s departure Tusker coach Sammy Omollo said: “We will miss him but we are happy for him. We cannot stand in his way after he received a better offer. That is our policy at Tusker.”

Omollo said Mandela’s departure will not interfere with their quest to lift the title for a second year running.

“He is a good player no doubt but we always have two people for every position in the team. This ensures that we are not affected when one leaves or is injured.

“So with Joseph Shikokoti, Jockins Atudo and Humphrey Okoti available, we will move on without Mandela and wish him all the best,” he said.

While Mandela succeeded in getting a contract at the South African club, Pascal Ochieng’ who accompanied him for trials at the club did not succeed and has returned home to join AFC Leopards on a six-month contract.

Mandela, made his debut for the national team in the first leg of their 2014 World Cup pre-qualifiers against Seychelles scoring in both legs of the qualifier, which Stars won convincingly.

He said in an interview then that playing for the national team was a dream come true.

“I am glad that the coach had faith in me and gave me the chance to start on such a big platform,” he said of former coach Francis Kimanzi.
