Oilers survives Quins attack to maintain perfect Kenya Cup start

Menengai Oilers on Saturday survived a scare after leaving it late to narrowly defeat Kenya Harlequin 16-15 to win the hotly contested Keya Cup match played at the ASK Showground in Nakuru.

A stoppage time penalty propelled the hosts past Quins which saw Oilers extend their unbeaten record this season to five matches.

Oilers in the process moved top of the Kenya Cup standings with 24 points after failing to pick a fifth consecutive bonus point win in their victory over Quins.

The Nakuru based side leapfrogs Kabras Sugar at the top after the latter’s game against Nondies was postponed.

Oilers headed into the match enjoying an unbeaten four game run and second in the log.

Their form was quick to notice after they started the match on the front foot with Timothy Omela converting an early penalty to lead 3-0 in the opening minutes of the match.

Omela would however miss two successive penalty attempts which would come to haunt them after Quins went over to take a 5-03 lead.

However, Beldad Ogeta ensured the host went to the break with the advantage after touching down for the hosts first try which saw them lead 8-5 at half time.

In the final half, Quins tied the scores at 8-8 with a penalty before Steve Ochieng went over the white wash to restore Oilers advantage as the hosts took a 13-8 lead.

Quins hit back with a converted try to lead 13-15.

However, just as they did in the first half, Oilers scored a late penalty which was converted by Geoffrey Ominde to give Oilers a hard fought 16-15 win.
