Benjamin Ayimba's family and Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman Oduor Gangla have urged Kenyans to continue to contribute money to offset the medical bill of the ailing rugby legend.

Though President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday sent his contribution of Sh1 million to the hospital, the former Kenya Sevens coach's bill currently stands at Sh2.3 million.

The former Kenya Sevens and 15s captain is critically ill and fighting for his life in hospital following a bout of cerebral malaria.

Ayimba, who is best remembered for masterminding Shujaa's historic triumph at the 2016 Singapore Sevens tournament-Kenya's first-ever title at the World Sevens Series, has not been seen in public since the beginning of the year.

And while calling on Kenyans to desist from spreading rumours on the condition of Ayimba, Gangla and family’s spokesperson Oscar Osir said this is the time for rugby fans to stand with their hero.

“It is a very difficult time for Ayimba’s family, but let those sending wrong information to the public respect the privacy of Benja and his family. The official communication will only come from the family. We will give those updates as and when it is necessary,” said Gangla.

Osir, who was Ayimba’s teammate during his playing days, added: “I want to thank Kenyans for the overwhelming support and response we have gotten since the news broke out. Benja served this country with distinction and it will be great if we continue supporting him. Let's continue contributing and support one of our own. This funding will help him to recover.”

Rita, Ayimba’s sister “simply said: “We are overwhelmed by the support we have received so far. Benja is struggling for his life but he is still there.”
