Kenya Sevens on Saturday morning qualified to semifinals of the Emirates Dubai Invitational Sevens tournament after closely knocking out Canada 21-19 in the quarterfinals played at the Sevens Stadium.

Mwamba RFC’s star Daniel Taabu scored a brace with KCB’s Johnstone Olindi sealing the win against the North American side who also scored three tries but failed to convert one.

Shujaa will now face France in the semifinals of the Main Cup at 2.14 pm East African Time after the French knocked out Uganda after thrashing them 45-7 in the other quarterfinal.

The other semifinal will see Argentina face Japan after both easily sailed through their quarters. Argentina saw off a resilient Chilean side after staging a second-half comeback to win 19-7 before Japan narrowly knocked out Spain 15-12.

Kenya drew 19-19 with France in yesterday’s group matches and they will be eyeing to reach the finals for the third time in the invitational events after previously reaching two in the Madrid Sevens played last month.

The clash between Argentina and Japan will also be a repeat of a group match in which Argentina won 31-14 on Friday.

Meanwhile, Kenya Lionesses poor run in Dubai continued after they lost their two opening matches to Brazil and France.

Kenya lost 17-5 to Brazil before going down 31-12 against France 2. The Lionesses will play their last match against France 1 at 1.52pm.
