Top Fry Nakuru aim to continue their good start to this year’s Kenya Cup campaign when they host Menengai Oilers today in the Nakuru derby at Nakuru Athletic Club in Nakuru.

Third in the Kenya Cup standings behind joint leaders Kabras Sugar and KCB, Nakuru will be aiming to go top of the standing by the end of match day three by winning their third consecutive match against their rivals.

Nakuru narrowly saw off Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad 13-8 in the opening match of their campaign before silencing a resilient Masinde Muliro University side MMUST RFC 23-10 to sit third in the log with eight points, two behind the leaders.

Speaking to the Standard Sports, Nakuru head coach Felix Oloo remains optimistic of coming out on top in the Nakuru Derby.

Oloo said they are destined for bigger things after an impressive start in the league, painting the picture of fighting for the Kenya Cup title which has eluded them for years.

“We are determined to keep the fire burning by winning our matches. We aim to qualify for the play-offs and possibly, win the title,” Oloo said.

“We did not play at our best in our last match against MMUST but we are prepared against Oilers. We need to win and continue putting pressure on the so called favorites KCB and Kabras. We are yet to hit our best but as things stand right now I believe we will win in the derby,” he said.

On the other hand, Oilers are coming from a disappointing 12-12 draw against Blak Blad and will be looking to return to winning ways in the derby as they seek to move up the table from their current fourth place.

In Nairobi, Kenya Cup returnees Mwamba and Impala will be playing their first games of the season when they take on Blak Blad and Kenya Harlequins respectively.

KRU earlier this week announced that Mwamba, Impala, and Nondies made a return to the local league. The three teams had said they were unable to adhere to Covid-19 protocols hence missing out on the first two rounds of matches.

For match day three, Nondies will have a rest alongside Kabras Sugar, KCB and Strathmore Leos after the return of the three teams led to Kenya Cup fixtures changes tom accommodate them.

Only three matches will be on the cards this weekend after the return of Nondies, Impala and Mwamba.
