Enterprise Cup: Kabras, Homeboyz through to Cup semis

Kabras Sugar are on course to retain the Enterprise Cup after reaching the semi-finals with a 54-10 thrashing of Mwamba in Kakamega on Saturday.

The sugar millers, who won their maiden Enterprise Cup title last year, will now face 2018 winners Homeboyz in the last four after the Deejays also secured a semi-final slot with a 33-11win against Nondescripts at the Jamhuri Showground.

The other semi-final fixture on March 28 will see KCB entertain Impala Saracens after both sides won against Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad and Nakuru RFC respectively.

It was a deserved victory for Kabras, who controlled the match from the onset against a depleted Mwamba side who rested most of their regulars perhaps as a precaution ahead of next weekend’s Kenya Cup playoffs.

Kabras coach Henly Du Plessis labelled the results a morale booster ahead of the resumption of the Kenya Cup league.

“We dominated play from the start and it was a good game for the boys who will not be in action next weekend during the Kenya Cup quarter-final playoffs. The boys needed this match to be ready mentally and physically for the Kenya Cup semi-finals three weeks from now,” Du Plessis told Standard Sports.

Lawrence Buyachi put the Kakamega outfit on the front foot with an early unconverted try straight from the scrum down before Eugene Sifuna made it 12-0 with another try from a well-executed line-out.

Fijian full back Jone Kubu took the scores to 21-0 after beating the Mwamba defence for pace before South African Ntabeni Dukisa joined the scorer’s list after being set up by Brian Tanga.

The Kenya Sevens scrum-half would then add his name to the scoresheet before Walter Okoth and Brian Juma compounded Mwamba’s woes as Du Plessis’ men led 47-0 at the break.

After the restart, Mwamba responded with a penalty before George Nyambua handed the hosts their eighth try of the match, converted by Dukisa.

Elvis Namusasi’s late try could only serve as a consolation for the Nairobi-based side as Kabras held on for the win.
