Strathmore Leos and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST RFC) kept their dreams of playing in the Kenya Cup alive after kicking of the second leg of the 2019-2020 KRU Championship with massive wins over the weekend.

Lucas Opal dotted a hat-trick of tries and two conversions in addition to Walter Oteku’s double and Jack Angawa’s try to seal Strathmore’s 10th straight win of the season in a 37-7 victory over Egerton Wasps.

The win saw the former Kenya Cup outfit maintain their eight-point lead atop the table with 48 points with captain Gabriel Adero remaining confident of finishing top.

Adero said they are optimistic of returning to the Kenya Cup after extending their unbeaten run to 10 matches.

“We are confident right now as a team and ready for any match as we can’t wait to get back to the Kenya Cup. The team has been playing well since day one and this victory is just a morale booster ahead of another tough second leg,” he said.

In Mombasa, MMUST also maintained their second spot position with a convincing 33-3 win over hosts Mombasa RFC at Mombasa Sports Club.

Winger Claus Shirievo grabbed three tries in the clash with Nobert Lubwani and Isaiah Mulongo landed a try each as the Kakamega-based students registered their ninth win of the campaign and taking their tally for the season to 40 points.

Third-placed Mean Machine edged out debutants Eldoret RFC 33-12 as University of Eldoret dropped points against Northern Suburbs after losing 26-16 in Karen.

United States International University-Africa (USIU) RFC bounced back to winning ways with a 27-15 victory over hosts Catholic Monks with the triumph taking them two places up, to fifth, on the table.

Bottom placed Kisii RFC were stripped points once again after dishing out their fourth walkover of the season by failing to honour the fixture against South Coast Pirates.
