KCB, Nakuru storm into Dala 7s quarters

Kenya Cup champions KCB, together with Homeboyz, Nakuru, Oilers, Nondies and Impala are through to the 2019 Dala Sevens Main Cup quarterfinals after winning their second pool matches.

The Kenya cup sides will be joined by championship winners Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) RFC who booked their third consecutive quarter-final berth in the three legs.

KCB beat Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad 17-0 in their second pool match to storm the quarters with circuit top scorer Vincent Onyala making two tries.

In their first match, the Kakamega Sevens champions thrashed debutants Vihiga Granites 44-0 with Andrew Amonde, Onyala, Jeff Okwach, Michael Wanjala, Samwel Asati and Kenya Sevens captain Jacob Ojee staging impressive shows.

“I am happy with the way we started our two matches with the confidence growing game by game. We are building on winning our second circuit after failing in Meru two weeks ago and I believe we are on the right track,” KCB 7s coach Dennis Mwanja said.

Homeboyz joined the bankers in the next round after Mike Nyakundi, Charles Omondi, Collins Shikoli and Augustine Lugonzo’s brace anchored them to a 31-0 win over Vihiga Granites and a narrow 24-14 win over Blak Blad.

In pool B, MMUST sailed into today’s quarters after thrashing their rivals Western Bulls 26-12 and knocking them out of the Main Cup trophy.

Bulls were the first on the scoresheet with an unconverted try before the students pulled one back through Claus Shirievo, who later doubled their lead with a converted try by John Bahati.

Tyson Juma then stretched MMUST lead before Teddy Akala pushed Bulls back into the game with a converted try.

Felix Wamocho sealed the Kakamega-based students win after landing a converted try between the posts. MMUST were joined by Kabeberi Sevens finalists Oilers who rallied from behind to beat Strathmore 22-10.

Kenya Cup side Kabras Sugar, Strathmore Leos and hosts Kisumu RFC were relegated to the challenge trophy after losing their two opening matches.

Kabras, who had reinforced heading to Dala after missing Kabeberi 7s, lost 19-7 to Top Fry Nakuru and 10-12 to Nondies and play their last pool match against Mean Machine, who have also dropped to challenge trophy. Kisumu lost 14-34 to Mwamba and 5-28 to Suburbs as Leos went down 10-29 and 10-22 to MMUST and Oilers respectively.

Defending champions Mwamba were knocked out of Main Cup quarters after losing their third match 7-12 to Northern Suburbs.

Kulabu edged out host Kisumu 14-34 in their first match but lost 12-19 to Impala in their second tie.

Mwamba will join Kabras, Kisumu and Bulls in the challenge trophy.
