How Menengai Oilers RFC whitewashed Homeboyz

Menengai Oilers RFC are the new Great Rift 10-Aside champions.

They achieved the feat after dismissing defending champions Homeboyz 10-0 in a hard-fought final at Nakuru Athletic Club yesterday.

Anthony Kibet touched down for Oilers after three minutes of play to the pleasure of their fans, who cheered them all through the first half.

Inspired by the confidence of their fans, Oilers increased the tally from a second try by Derek Keyoga.

“It has not been easy, but we fought like a wounded lion to win the title. Teamwork delivered the title and that is the way to go in our future matches and tournaments,” said Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru.

Weru is now focusing on the National Sevens Circuit kicking off in two months time.

In the semifinals, Homeboyz dismissed Kenyatta University’s Blad Blad 19-0 from three tries by Michael Nyakundi, Brian Otieno and Bob Muhati and two conversions by Nyakundi (Michael) and Brian Ayimba to reach the finals.

On their part, Menengai Oilers had dismissed KCB 7-0 in the second semi-final match from a try by the never-say-die Harold Anduvate and a conversion by Davis Saudi.

In the quarterfinals, Homeboyz had dismissed Masinde Muliro University of Science Technology (MMUST) 10-5. Oilers defeated Strathmore Leos 17-12, Blak Blad clobbered University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine 7-0 and KCB smashed Impala 14-5.

In the play-offs of the Main Cup, KCB dismissed Blak Blad 12-5.

In the Challenge Cup finals pitting teams that failed to make it to the knockout stages of the Main Cup, hosts Nakuru RFC won the title from a 22-0 thrashing of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture Technology (JKUAT), thanks to four conversions by Charles Odhiambo (2), Teddy Ratemo and Monate Akuwei and a conversion by Collins Onyango.

In the semi-finals, Nakuru had earlier dismissed Nondescripts 20-0 while JKUAT conquered Makueni RFC.

In the fifth-place finals, MMUST hammered Strathmore Leos 35-10 from five tries by Samuel Mbeche (2), Clause Shiryevo, Timothy Mmasi and Emmanuel Muna and four conversions by Saidi Mulongo, Sebastian Ochieng, John Bahati and Ian Mukanzi.

In the semi-finals, MMUST hammered Mean Machine 21-0 while Leos beat Impala 29-5.

University of Eldoret won the 13th-place finals from a 17-12 win over Egerton Wasps 17-12.

In the Division Two of the Great Rift 10-Aside championships, Nakuru RFC II dismissed Stingers 5-0 to win the title.

Meanwhile, Brian Songoi of Homeboyz was voted as the Most Promising Player while Carrick Mbaile of Menengai Oilers emerges the Most Valuable Player of the three day tournament.

In another development, Menengai Oilers, Nakuru RFC and Masinde Muliro University of Science Technology(MMUST) emerged as the teams that produced most outstanding players to the 2019 Great Rift 10-Aside first team with each side producing two players.
