RUGBY: Kabras consolidate top spot in Kenya Cup battle

As the 2018-19 Kenya Cup season takes a three-week break, 2016 champions Kabras Sugar sit pretty at the top of the 12-team standings with 25 points after five rounds of matches.

The side, which is coached by South African Henley Du Plessis, will head into the new year buoyed by their superb form that has seen them bag bonus-point wins in all their matches thus far.

Du Plessis’ charges are now the only unbeaten side in the division following their 41-10 triumph against Impala Saracens over the weekend.

The loss in Kakamega consequently saw Impala relinquish second position, with defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), who beat Homeboyz 34-15 in Ruaraka, dislodging them.

Meanwhile, Mwamba’s revival continued as they chalked up a 27-15 victory against debutants Menengai Oilers at the RFUEA grounds.

It was a second successive win for Kulabu, who are now three points outside the play-off positions.

“I must commend our forwards. Oilers were not a walkover; they have a solid scrum but we adapted quickly and scoring early points proved helpful.

"All we are looking for is consistency in our style of play and manage the game better,” Mwamba head coach Kevin Wambua said.

Wambua handed Kenya Sevens international Collins Injera his first start of the campaign with the speedster playing a pivotal role in the win.

“He was very important because he’s one of those players who bring something different to the team. He also motivates the team and gives us solid turn-overs from the break down,” said Wambua.

On his part, Menengai Oilers coach Gibson Weru lamented over inexperience having seen the newbies slump to their fourth loss of the season.

Meanwhile, University side Strathmore Leos will spend the festive season at the bottom of the pile after failing to go past compatriots Blak Blad at the Kenyatta University grounds.

Strathmore,u nder the tutelage of John Mbai, occupy one of the two relegation positions alongside University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine, who fell 29-19 away at Nakuru RFC.
